  • Helen Phillips’s (’09) new novel, The Need, was released in July from Simon & Schuster.

  • Ebony Flowers’s (’17) graphic debut, Hot Comb, was published by Drawn and Quarterly in June.

  • Namwali Serpell’s (’11) first novel, The Old Drift (Hogarth), debuted this spring.

  • Merritt Tierce (’11) received a 2019 Whiting Writer’s Award.

  • Britteney Black Rose Kapri’s (’15) debut poetry collection, Black Queer Hoe, was released in 2018 by Haymarket Books.

  • Karen Bender’s (’97) collection The New Order, published by Counterpoint Press in 2018, was longlisted for the Story Prize.

  • Kirstin Valdez Quade (’13) received a 2018-19 Rome Prize from The American Academy in Rome.

  • Vanessa Hua’s (’15) debut novel, A River of Stars, was published by Ballantine in 2018.

  • Apricot Irving’s (’11) debut, The Gospel of Trees, was published by Simon & Schuster in 2018.

  • Elif Batuman’s (’07) debut novel, The Idiot (Penguin, 2017), was a finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize in fiction.
